Titanium Grade 2 vs Grade 5 — which one does your part need?
| Property | Grade 2 (commercially pure) | Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Unalloyed, ductile, excellent corrosion resistance | Alpha-beta alloy, the workhorse high-strength titanium |
| Strength | Moderate | High strength-to-weight ratio |
| Machinability | Easier of the two grades | Demanding: heat concentration, tool wear |
| Typical parts | Fittings, housings, marine hardware, chemical-contact parts | Aerospace brackets and fittings, medical components, impellers, high-load lightweight parts |
| Typical tolerance | ±0.01 mm turned/milled; 0.001 mm on critical features via grinding or EDM | |
If your drawing names another grade, send it anyway — grade substitutions and sourcing are reviewed at quotation, and a material certificate for the heat or lot used is supplied with every shipment.
Why titanium is demanding to CNC machine — and what that means for your quote
Titanium is not "impossible", it is different. Four properties drive every decision on a titanium job:
- Poor thermal conductivity. Heat stays at the cutting edge instead of flowing into the chip, so cutting speeds are lower and tooling is changed on a schedule, not on failure.
- Low elastic modulus. The material deflects under cutting forces, which matters on thin walls and long parts — set-up rigidity and light finishing passes prevent chatter marks.
- Work hardening at sharp edges. Feeds are kept up so the tool always cuts below the surface, never rubs.
- Chemical reactivity at high temperature. Flood coolant and sharp, positive-rake tooling are standard.
Practically, this means a titanium part takes longer in machine time than the same geometry in aluminium — usually reflected in the quoted unit price, not in the process. The tolerance capability is the same as for other metals: ±0.01 mm typical, 0.001 mm on critical features via the grinding/EDM route.
How a titanium part is routed at Boyang Hardware
| Step | Operation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drawing review | Critical dimensions, datum strategy and fits reviewed before quoting |
| 2 | CNC milling / turning | 3-axis, 4-axis or 5-axis; ±0.01–0.02 mm typical |
| 3 | Precision operation (if specified) | Grinding or wire EDM on critical features; down to 0.001 mm |
| 4 | Surface treatment | Anodising is not standard on titanium; passivation, polishing and coatings reviewed per part |
| 5 | 100% inspection | 3D CMM, optical projector, calipers, height gauges; report ships with parts |
Where these titanium parts end up
Boyang Hardware supplies aerospace and business jet programmes, medical device assemblies, robotics and industrial automation, marine and underwater equipment, and handheld analytical instruments — all applications where a mis-machined titanium feature is expensive to discover late. The same facility also machines the mating aluminium, stainless and brass components, so a titanium part and its housing can ship as one inspected assembly.
Documentation supplied with a titanium shipment
- Dimensional inspection report against the drawing (100% of parts measured)
- Material certificate for the heat or lot used
- First article inspection record for new parts
- Certificates for outsourced finishes

FAQs
Can you machine titanium from a sample instead of a drawing?
Yes, reverse-engineering from a physical sample is supported. For titanium with critical fits, a drawing-first route is preferred so tolerance stack-up is reviewed before cutting metal.
What is the minimum order for titanium parts?
There is no fixed minimum. Prototype and small batches are accepted, from a few dozen pieces upward — see small batch CNC machining.
How fast can I get titanium samples?
Samples are typically delivered in 3–7 working days, quotations in 1–2 working days; mass production takes 8–30 working days depending on quantity and finish.
